How to run an Avast 5 Free Antivirus Boot-Time scan

How to run an Avast 5 Free Antivirus Boot-Time scan option (32-bit Windows only):

Its boot-time scan option is a great way to remove infection which are located in locked system files such as "System Volume Information".  The scan is a feature which sets Avast apart from many of the other free antivirus products available today.

To begin, open Avast.

You can do this by either double-clicking the desktop shortcut,

or by left-clicking the system tray icon.

Avast! Pro-Antivirus 5

Click Scan Computer on the left hand side, then click Boot-time Scan just
below it.

Adjust the Boot-time scan parameters.
Click the Areas to scan box and click Browse...

Select the folders to scan.

Set the Heuristic sensitivity to High
The click Schedule Now near the top.

Once everything is set, it should look like this.

Once you are ready to run the scan click Restart computer near the top right of the window.

The Boot-time scan with run once your system restarts, if any suspicious files are detected it will prompt for action. I typically select option 2 which is to Delete All. Once the scan has completed, the system will boot
into windows.

To check the scan log you can open avast again and this time on the left hand side click Scan Computer. This time click Scan Logs.  All of the scan logs will be listed in the main window.

Unfortunately the Boot-time feature is not available for 64-Bit operating systems however, Avast 5 is still a great product for keeping your computer protected.
