World of Warcraft Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1

For all those World of Warcraft players out there!

It looks like many are having significant performance issues since the most recent patching of the game in preparation for the new Cataclysm expansion.  Frame rates dropping to 3-10 FPS seems to be the most common.  The default hotkey for displaying your FPS is "Ctrl+R" which will display your current frame rate above the bottom skill bars in the middle of the screen.  If you have much lower performance than before patch 4.0.1 I may have the fix for you!

As painful as this suggestion will be, it appears that the FPS issues are being caused by out of date and/or no longer supported addons.  So after logging into your account, click the Addons button in the lower left corner and then click "Disable All" to turn off the installed addons.  If your frame rate has improved by disabling all of the addons then you have found the cause of your diminished FPS.

It may at this point be a good idea to reset your Video settings to the recommended at least while performing these tests.  To reset Video setting defaults while in-game, press "Esc" on the keyboard, click Video at the top.  In the window that opens click "Recommended" in the lower left corner.  Click "Apply" in the lower right.  Then click "Ok".

Once diagnosed you can re-enable addons one at a time to identify the bad one.  After enabling each addon be sure to login to the game, press "CTRL+R" and run around for a bit.   If you manage identify the problematic addon go to your WoW addons folder (typically \Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\Addons\ or \Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\Interface\Addons\) and delete it from the folder.  Then check out Curse Gaming for some updated addons.
